DID YOU KNOW . . .

There are more than 3 million poisoningsevery year and that household cleaners are the number one cause of poisonings of children.
  • Formaldehyde, phenol, and benzeneare all found in common household cleaners and cosmetics. These chemicals are known to be cancer causing and toxic to the immune and nervous system
  • There has been a call from the U.S./Canadian Commission to ban bleach in North America. Bleach is being linked to the rising rates of breast cancer in women, reproductive problems in men and learning and behavioral problems in children.
  • The National Cancer Association released results of a 15 year study concluding that women who work in the home are at a 54% higher risk of developing cancer than women who work outside the home due to the toxic fumes from cleaning and laundry products that they use.
  • According to the American Cancer Society, 1 out of 3 people have cancer.
  • Lysol is even more dangerous than we thought. Lysol contains phenols. Fatal poisoning can occur through skin absorption and although there have been many poisonings from phenolic solutions, phenol continues to be used in consumer products.
  • There is Formaldehyde in Johnson & Johnson's baby shampoo.
  • Since 1980, asthma has increased by 600%. The Canadian Lung Association and the Asthma Society of Canada identify common household cleaners and cosmetics as triggers.
  • Add/ADHD is an epidemic in schools today. Behavioral problems have long been linked to exposure to toxic chemicals and molds.
  • Chemical and environmental sensitivities are known to cause all types of headaches.
  • The New York Poison Control Centerreports that 85% of product warning labels are either inadequate or incorrect for identifying a poison and for first aid instructions.
  • Formaldehyde, phenol, benzene, toluene, and xylene are all found in common household cleaners, cosmetics, beverages, fabrics, and cigarette smoke. These chemicals are known to be cancer causing and toxic to the immune and nervous systems.
  • The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health has found more than 2,500 chemicals in cosmetics that are toxic, cause tumors, reproductive complications, biological mutations, eye and skin irritations.
  • Fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, arthritis, lupus, multiple sclerosis, circulatory disorders, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's disease, irritable bowel syndrome, depression, and hormonal problems are diseases commonly related to chemical exposure.
  • The EPA reports toxic chemicals in our home cleaning and personal care products are 3 times more likely to cause cancer than outside pollutants.
  • The President's Toxic Substances Strategy Committee warns 90% of all cancers are triggered by toxic chemicals in our home environment
  • The California Public Research Group warns Phenol, which is used in most household disinfectants, can cause cancer, deactivate the sensory nerve endings, damage the liver, kidneys, and central nervous system
  • Between 1950 and 1990 lung cancer has increased 364% despite that smoking has declined every year since 1950.
  • Turn of the century (1900) caner rates were 1 in 50. Today it is about 1 in 3. Within the next several years it is expected to be 1 in 2.

De-Tox Your Home and Safeguard Your Family

Toxic chemicals abound in your home. Now is the time to convert to safe products.

By Janet Crescenzo

Ed. Note: Ms. Crescenzo is a mother of four, grandmother of eight and also a great grandmom. In the mid-70’s, she visited a holistic practitioner in Pennsylvania, which transformed her thinking and enabled her to realize that each of our lives, as well as our health, is the sum total of the choices and decisions we make. It took decades of research and practice for her to develop a well-rounded and practical approach to a lifestyle of wellness. That led to her passion of helping people to make educated nutritional and environmental lifestyle choices for wellness in their lives and homes. The following is a question and answer session with her.

Question: There is a lot of talk these days about the general rise of cancer among Americans and also the rise of autism in children, not to mention the toll our household products are taking on the environment. Many are claiming the toxic nature of the products found in our homes, like cleaning and laundry products and the personal products we use on our bodies, are directly related to this increase. The claim is that what we use to clean our homes, clothes and bodies basically contain poisonous ingredients and have a direct correlation to the rise in health problems. You are very experienced in this field. Do you feel this is true and how do I determine what is safe for my family and the environment?

Answer: I think it’s absolutely true. You can find extensive research available to document these concerns. Visit www.epa.gov for starters, or www.checnet.org, Kelly Preston Travolta’s educational site, and www.childrenenvironment.org. With a brief review of these sites, you will quickly find out that these are serious concerns that shouldn’t be ignored.

Q. So you are saying that there is supporting information that the products we’ve been using for decades have been harmful and, in many cases, killing us.

A. It’s not just my opinion. According to the American Cancer Institute, at the beginning of the 20th Century, the cancer incidence rate was about one in fifty. Today it’s one in three Americans who willsuffer with cancer, with that number expected to reach one in two in the 21st Century. Cancer is the number two killer of adults and the leading cause of death from disease in Children.

How about this fact: since 1977, the rate of cancer among American children has been steadily rising at  nearly one percent per year. Birth defects are on the rise as well.  Over 150,000 babies are born with birth defects each year for unknown reasons. Another half million babies are miscarried early in pregnancy, with an additional 24,000 miscarried late in pregnancy or stillborn. Infertitlity is increasing at an alarming rate, and the condition is becoming widespread, with over two million couples who want children but can’t conceive. (Raising Children Toxic Free, Farrar, Strauss & Giroux)

Asthma was once a very rare disease. Now the condition is common. The asthma rate has tripled in the last 20 years with 20 to 30 million Americans currently afflicted. (Indoor Air Quality, Consumer Federation of America)

Attention deficit disorder (ADD) in adults and children is also rising. In 1993, 4.5 million children took the drug Ritalin so they could sit still long enough to learn. By 1998, 11.4 million children were being drugged with this powerful narcotic. (Your Children and Ritalin, The Detroit News, 1998)

Q. You paint a pretty dire picture. What’s to be done about it?

A. Well, doctors now stress that early detection and removal of children from toxic exposures in their homes and schools are critical to successfully preventing  or treating these illnesses. Read Let’s Stop Poisoning Our Children, by Debra Lynn Dodd. That will give you a good start on helping de-toxify your home.

Another suggestion is to read content labels on products you are using. Here’s an example. This is from the label of a popular and common wood cleaner used in the home. “Keep out of reach of children…May produce allergic reaction by inhalation or skin contact. Use only in well-ventilated area. Protective gloves recommended for prolonged use.  If sprayed in eyes, flush thoroughly with water and call physician immediately…Inhaling contents can be harmful or fatal.” Does this sound like a healthy, safe product to you?

Q. Where do I buy safe products?

A. Personally, I shop direct from an International Health and Wellness Company at wholesale. The products are 100% satisfaction guaranteed and delivered to my door. I don’t have to go out searching for them. Also, if you’d like to get more educated on wellness, I invite you to log on to one of my weekly webinars.
